Every day, almost 40 million litres of wastewater enters rivers and other water bodies with only a tiny fraction adequately treated. A recent World Bank report suggests that such a release of pollution upstream lowers economic growth in downstream areas, reducing GDP growth in these regions by up to a third. To make it worse, in middle-income countries like India where water pollution is a bigger problem, the impact increases to a loss of almost half of GDP growth.
Industrial production has grown in India by more than 50-fold over the past century. About 77 per cent of the industries contribute to water pollution while 15 per cent to air pollution and the remaining eight per cent to both air and water pollution. The industries which are dependent on natural resources are the most polluting ones and are also the ones growing most growing rapidly. Heavy metal pollution from industries is affecting human health in a significant way.
As a result industrial wastewater treatment remains a key requirement for any and all industrial units. However, there is no single authoritative and accessible resource that can guide and advise entrepreneurs, regulatory bodies and other decision makers within the realm of industrial development as to selection and use of appropriate technology.
